Commercial Umbrella Insurance

Umbrella and Excess Liability policies are similar in that they provide additional coverage when the limits of insurance on an underlying policy are exceeded.

However, It is important to note the difference between the way that Excess and Umbrella Liability policies are written.

Excess Liability Insurance policies are no broader than the underlying liability policy in that they are written on a following form basis. Its sole purpose is to provide additional limits of insurance of in excess of a single underlying insurance policy.

Umbrella Liability policies are generally written over various primary liability policies, such as a business auto policy, commercial general liability policy, watercraft liability, aircraft liability, and employers liability policies. Umbrella Liability policies are intended to provide additional limits for most if not all of an insured's coverages and also offer some additional broadened coverages that may not be provided in the underlying coverages.

It is also important to note that Umbrella coverage does not apply to the Professional Liability policy.
